Where the photo is taken

Wisconsin DMV (WisDOT) takes the ID card photo at a DMV Customer Service Center. A first-time ID card, a first REAL ID card, or a photo change requires an in-person visit.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

Eligible U.S. citizens can renew or replace an ID card online (or once by mail), and the photo already on file is printed on the card; a selfie is only for identity verification. The next renewal after an online or mail renewal requires a DMV visit for a new photo.
