Should you make a photo?
Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.
This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.
Issuing agency: Michigan Secretary of State
Where the photo is taken
The Secretary of State takes a new photo when you renew your ID at an office. In most cases you only need to visit an office every 12 years for a photo.
Online or mail renewal and replacement
Online, mail, and self-service station renewal of a state ID is available when eligible, and you cannot use it if your photo is not on file or is more than 12 years old, or if you used an alternative method for the last two renewals. The pages reviewed do not offer an applicant photo upload.
Photo law and rules
MCL 28.292(1)(b) requires an official state personal identification card to contain a digital photographic image. MCL 28.292(13) allows renewal for additional 4-year periods by mail or other methods prescribed by the Secretary of State.
