Do you need to make a photo?

Do not prepare a separate photo unless the state agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one. The agency procedure below describes where a photo is captured and what is known about remote renewal.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

Michigan Compiled Laws § 257.310(2)(b) requires the license to show the licensee's digital photographic image, expiration date, and signature, subject to § 257.310f. § 257.307(2) allows the applicant's image and signature to be captured when the application is made and requires a digital photographic image captured under that section to appear on the license. § 257.307(9) allows the Secretary of State to renew a license by mail or other prescribed methods for 1 additional 4-year period, or beginning July 1, 2021 for 2 additional 4-year periods, with in-person renewal required for certain registrants under the sex offenders registration act. The photo statutes were reviewed; the administrative-rule audit remains pending.

Where the photo is taken

A new photo is taken during an in-person renewal at the Secretary of State office. The state says most residents visit in person every 12 years for a photo update.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

Online, mail, and self-service renewals can be used between photo visits when eligible. A new photo requires an office visit.

New photo upload: Only treat upload as allowed when the linked official instructions explicitly say so.
