Find out whether you need to make a photo for a state ID card, where the photo is taken, and what is known about renewing or replacing the card remotely.

Should you make a photo?
Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.
This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.
Issuing agency: Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles
Where the photo is taken
A new Mass ID requires an appointment at an RMV Service Center. The RMV says a name change on a license or ID is done at a Service Center, where your photo is taken.
Online or mail renewal and replacement
Standard Mass IDs and REAL Mass IDs you already hold can be renewed online, and replacement IDs can be ordered online. The RMV pages reviewed do not say whether the photo on file is reused or when a new photo is required, so that is not established. Limited-term ID renewals and name changes require an in-person visit.
Photo law and rules
M.G.L. c. 90, § 8E refers to the photograph or facial image required on the identification card. It also allows a one-year extension of the current card photograph for a renewal applicant who must have a new photo taken, if a licensed physician documents that medical treatment for an illness has temporarily changed the applicant's appearance.
