Where the photo is taken

Indiana ID cards can be handled at a BMV branch. Indiana law requires even applicants for a photo-exempt ID card to take a digital photo, which is used for facial recognition but not printed on the card; photo-exempt cards are applied for and renewed only at a branch.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

Eligible ID cards can be renewed online through myBMV or at a BMV Connect kiosk, generally every other renewal, and replaced online up to 10 times, but only when your previous photo is on file, which indicates the photo on file is used; no photo upload is offered. Name or address changes, foreign nationals, and photo-exempt cards require a branch visit.
