Where the photo is taken

At a DMV office the applicant has their photo taken and thumbprint scanned for a new ID card or an in-person renewal; the card is mailed in three to four weeks.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

Eligible ID holders can renew online (within 90 days before or 12 months after expiration, with no address or personal-description change, and not a first REAL ID) or by mail. A mail renewal is not allowed if the last two ID cards were renewed by mail or internet. The page does not describe uploading a photo, and DMV notices may require an in-person renewal with a new photo.
