Do you need to make a photo?

Do not prepare a separate photo unless the state agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one. The agency procedure below describes where a photo is captured and what is known about remote renewal.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

W.S. 31-7-115(a)(iii)(D) requires a Wyoming driver license to include a full facial digital photograph of the licensee; this was read in the 2023 enrolled act (SF0020, effective July 1, 2023) that removed the word "color," not in the compiled code. WYDOT's Chapter 1 driver-license rules, as posted in the Legislative Service Office's 2024 rule-review filing, provide that a new photograph is taken at each in-person renewal unless the person asks to reuse the previous photo for medical reasons and that photo is no more than 10 years old (Section 8(a)(i)(H)), and address renewal by mail in Section 7. W.S. 31-7-118(b) (as amended in 2025) allows a replacement license by mail or in person only if the department has a digitized photograph on record. The renewal statute (W.S. 31-7-119) could not be opened, and the rule's final effective version was not confirmed.

Where the photo is taken

Wyoming requires an in-person renewal every 10 years and takes an updated photo at that visit.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

Remote renewal is available between the in-person photo cycles, subject to eligibility.

New photo upload: Only treat upload as allowed when the linked official instructions explicitly say so.
