Should you make a photo?

Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.

This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.

Where the photo is taken

Tennessee's renewal guidance covers both licenses and ID cards and says a new photo must be taken in person every other renewal cycle, which happens at a Driver Services Center.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

If you can renew online, the new credential is issued with the photo already on file; you cannot upload one. Because a new in-person photo is required every other cycle, you may not be eligible to renew online.

Photo law and rules
