Do you need to make a photo?

Do not prepare a separate photo unless the state agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one. The agency procedure below describes where a photo is captured and what is known about remote renewal.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

South Dakota Codified Laws § 32-12-17.10 requires an operator's license, motorcycle operator's license, or restricted minor's permit to bear a full facial digital photograph. § 32-12-17.11 allows the Department of Public Safety to maintain a photographic image of all licensed drivers to facilitate issuing duplicate licenses. § 32-12-43.1 allows eligible holders to renew by mail or electronically, limited to renewal once in any ten-year period; it does not address photographs. The controlling photo statutes were reviewed; the administrative rules authorized by § 32-12-43.2 have not been reviewed.

Where the photo is taken

An original license photo is taken by an examiner at a Driver Licensing location. A driver whose license has been expired more than 30 days must visit an exam station and test to renew; the reviewed renewal page does not say whether this particular visit always captures a new portrait.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

Eligible drivers may renew online once every ten years. The process requires an SD.gov login and may require uploaded address or vision documents, but the agency’s online-renewal instructions do not list an applicant portrait upload. They do not clearly state whether the stored portrait is reused.

New photo upload: Only treat upload as allowed when the linked official instructions explicitly say so.

Scope and limitations

This entry reports the issuing agency’s current public procedure. It does not by itself establish the full legal rule for every permit, state ID, exception, or transaction.
