Should you make a photo?
Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.
This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.
Issuing agency: North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles
Where the photo is taken
A first state ID always requires a visit to an NCDMV driver license office, and state law requires the card to include a color photograph. NCDMV refers to in-person transactions where a new photo is taken; the pages reviewed do not ask you to bring a photo.
Online or mail renewal and replacement
State IDs can be renewed online from six months before to two years after expiration. Non-REAL ID cards can be renewed online two times in a row; a REAL ID card can be renewed online a second consecutive time only if you had an in-person transaction with a new photo since your last renewal.
Photo law and rules
N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-37.7(c) requires a special identification card to include a color photograph of the holder, and § 20-37.7(d) requires the Division to offer renewal in person and online.
