Should you make a photo?

Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.

This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.

Issuing agency: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

Where the photo is taken

New Jersey MVC staff take the non-driver ID photo at the agency camera station in a Licensing Center. MVC's Skip the Trip FAQ says anyone who renews a non-driver ID at an MVC agency has a new photo taken.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

MVC's non-driver ID page offers online renewal. The current pages reviewed do not describe mail renewal for non-driver IDs or say how the photo is handled online. An older MVC FAQ says documents issued through the mail use the photo and signature already on file, and that if MVC requires a new photo taken in person, you cannot renew by mail. No photo upload route was found.
