Do you need to make a photo?

Do not prepare a separate photo unless the state agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one. The agency procedure below describes where a photo is captured and what is known about remote renewal.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

Neb. Rev. Stat. § 60-4,119(1) requires operators' licenses (except farm permits) to include a digital image and digital signature of the licensee, with capture costs paid by the issuer. § 60-484.02(1) requires each applicant to have a digital image captured, and says preserved images may be retrieved only by the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue renewal and replacement licenses. § 60-4,122(8)(a) lets qualified Class O and Class M licensees aged 21 or older renew electronically using the preserved image, but every licensee, including one out of state at renewal, must renew in person at least once every sixteen years and have a new digital image and signature captured. The controlling photo statutes were reviewed; the administrative-rule audit (Title 247 NAC) remains pending.

Where the photo is taken

Nebraska says to be prepared to take a new photo every time you visit a DMV office.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

Out-of-state mail renewal may be available, but after a remote renewal without an updated photo, the customer must appear at an office to update the photo before another out-of-state renewal.

New photo upload: Only treat upload as allowed when the linked official instructions explicitly say so.
