Where the photo is taken

Driver and Vehicle Services takes your photo at the office when you apply for or renew an ID card. If the photo does not meet DVS standards, you may be asked to come back and take a new one.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

The DVS renewal page describes renewing an ID card in person at certain DVS locations, with an optional online pre-application; it does not describe online or mail renewal. A limited remote-application process under Minn. Stat. § 171.06, subd. 7 serves specified eligible people and requires either a photo on file from the last five years or the most recent issuance or, for a noncompliant card only, a photo submitted by the applicant that meets state requirements.

Photo law and rules

Minn. R. 7410.1810, subp. 1 requires an ID card applicant to have a full-face image taken by the department. Minn. Stat. § 171.07, subd. 3 requires the ID card to bear a colored photograph or electronically produced image.
