Should you make a photo?
Do not prepare your own photo unless the agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one.
This page covers a state identification card. It does not automatically apply to driver licenses, learner permits, or every exception.
Issuing agency: Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles
Where the photo is taken
Maine State ID cards are issued at BMV branch offices and mobile units, and REAL ID applicants must have their photograph taken there. State law requires a nondriver ID card to contain the applicant's photograph or digital image.
Online or mail renewal and replacement
Maine ID card holders can renew or replace online if they have already provided proof of legal presence and residency and have not changed their name. The BMV pages reviewed do not say how the photo is handled online or how often a new photo is required, and no photo upload is offered.
Photo law and rules
29-A M.R.S. §1410(2)(A) requires each nondriver identification card to contain the applicant's photograph or digital image.
