Do you need to make a photo?

Do not prepare a separate photo unless the state agency or your transaction instructions specifically ask for one. The agency procedure below describes where a photo is captured and what is known about remote renewal.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

K.S.A. 8-243(a) requires a Kansas driver's license to include either a digital color image or photograph, or a laser-engraved photograph, of the licensee. K.S.A. 8-247(b) lets certain military members and dependents whose license expires while they are outside the United States renew by mail if the division has a photograph or digital image of them on file, and limits that mail renewal to once. The statutes reviewed do not say who takes the photo or how often a new photo is required for ordinary renewals. The controlling photo statutes were reviewed; the administrative-regulation audit remains pending.

Where the photo is taken

In-person renewal requires a new photo and signature captured at the licensing office.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

Some mail/out-of-state services require a current photo already on file. To change the photo, visit a driver-license office.

New photo upload: Only treat upload as allowed when the linked official instructions explicitly say so.
