Where the photo is taken

County DMV staff take the State ID photo in person at a county DMV office. First-time applicants must apply in person and have a photograph taken.

Online or mail renewal and replacement

There is no online renewal described; most renewals must be done in person. For U.S. citizens and permanent residents who hold a REAL ID compliant card, a new photo must be taken in person by DMV staff at every other renewal. Mail renewal is limited (for example, REAL ID holders 80 or older who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents), and the page does not describe uploading a photo.
