Do you need to make a photo?

Usually no for an in-person transaction: the issuing office takes the photo. Eligible online renewals are handled through the state portal; the public guidance reviewed does not describe uploading a new portrait.

This page covers a driver license. It does not automatically apply to learner permits, state identification cards, commercial endorsements, or every exception.

Photo law and requirements

Ala. Code § 32-6-6(a) requires an Alabama driver license to contain a color photograph, except temporary permits or special circumstances set by ALEA. Ala. Code § 32-6-4(a)(1)–(2) provides that for a renewal, the county judge of probate or license commissioner takes the licensee’s color photograph using ALEA equipment. The same section covers nondriver IDs. Ala. Admin. Code r. 760-X-1-.22 concerns an ALEA-approved digital copy of the credential; it does not describe applicant photo upload.

Where the photo is taken

No applicant-made or applicant-uploaded photo is specified in the reviewed statute or ALEA instructions. For an in-person renewal, the law assigns photo capture to the county judge of probate or license commissioner using ALEA equipment. Do not bring a print unless ALEA or your appointment notice specifically asks for one.

Online renewal, photo reuse, and upload

ALEA’s current driver manual says eligible applicants may renew online; it does not describe a self-photo upload step. The renewal eligibility checker and portal determine whether online renewal is available for a specific license. If a new photo is needed or you cannot renew online, use an issuing office; the statute assigns in-person renewal photo capture to the county official.

New photo upload: No upload route was identified in the public instructions reviewed.
